Dog fends off coyotes and protects teen for 2 days after a car crash, now being hailed a hero

"I felt my head and I looked down at my hand and it was just full of blood," Joe explained, "Sako laid on top of me, kept me pretty warm."

Sako is a very special dog whose loyalty towards his human made him a hero.

This King Shepherd is loving and friendly and loves being around his family. He’s used to the company of humans as he has spent his whole life as a pet.

When his owner, Joseph Philips-Garcia, suffered serious injuries in a car crash, Sako was there to keep him warm until help arrived.

It all happened while Joseph, his aunt, his friend, and Sako were driving home after spending a day at the mountains picking wild potatoes. For reasons unknown, their vehicle went off the road and crashed. Sadly, Joseph’s aunt and friend died at the scene, and Joseph was unable to move because of a severe injury in his leg. His bone was broken and protruding and he was in a lot of pain.

Sako helped him survive in the wilderness for two nights and three days by staying by his side and keeping him warm.

This smart dog brought Joseph some wood so that he could lit a fire and helped drag him near a creek to have some water.

Joseph was concerned for the safety of both of them because there were wild animals around them, but Sako wasn’t afraid and was ready to face the coyotes that wouldn’t stop howl.

“We were just falling asleep, and that’s when you hear the first couple of howls,” the teen said. “He got up as soon as he realized their scent was coming closer and closer, and then he just went in. You could hear them just fighting and the bushes rumbling around.”

40 hours after they had been reported missing, Joseph and Sako were rescued.

Everyone was glad the two managed to survive, and it was all thanks to Sako’s resourcefulness and bravery.

People praised Sako and hailed him a hero. Purina inducted him into their 47th Animal Hall of Fame and we are very thankful for that because he deserved it.

The family is happy to be having such friend like Sako in their lives whom they can trust and always turn to.
